Day 2 - Sam Farquhar

Having woken up extremely early by an alarm set one hour early and by Mr Alderson who made the same mistake, we went downstairs with specualtions about what an Icelandic breakfast would be like. Cold meats, breads, cold herring, boiled eggs (with shells on(!)), rye bread (brown!) and waffles from a (!) waffle machine (!) was the answer; with sandwiches made for lunch as well.
Firstly, we took a trip, with our guide David, to Thingvellir National Park, where the gap between the North American and Eurasian is located. We saw tall valleys, giant plains, huge mountains and gigantic trout!
Our second journey was to the main physical activity of the day: caving, specifically in a lava tube. Our caving guide, Petur, took us down an incredibly dark passageway, filled with jagged rocks which we had to scramble over. During the break in the middle of the journey, Petur told us all to turn off the torches on our helmets and simply look and listen. Only the drip of water from the roof could be heard and literally nothing could be seen. When we finally reached the end, the daylight was blinding.
Then we went to Geysir, after a short lunch break, to see the erupting geysers. The main one, Strokkur, erupted seven times during the course of our stay, with everyone missing loads of the photos!
A final trip was to Gullfoss, and extraordinary waterfall poaring 40m to the bottom of the valley and we moved on toour hotel for the night, the imaginatively named Hotel Gullfoss where I am sitting right now.
Looking forward to tomorrow...

Sam Farquhar
